Reversing the decline of classics in state schools

Some schools come to us directly. Others we reach through our fourteen regional classics networks, largely based at Russell Group universities, which target schools in areas of low social mobility. That is deliberate: it means pupils in schools with no tradition of classics benefit, not only the ones already teaching it.

By training teachers — many with no subject specialism in classics — and then supporting them for as long as they need it, we aim to make a classical subject a permanent part of the curriculum rather than a one-off enrichment project. Investment in these networks is cost-effective, allowing us to reach more schools for every pound given.

By 2025 our goal is to introduce the study of ancient history, classical civilisation, Latin and Greek to at least 1,500 state primary and secondary schools, many in areas of socio-economic disadvantage.
